"Assessing the demand for rail freight transport in Hungary"

Client:

Hungarian Rail Office

Description of research:

This research has two directions. One is the assessment of the volume of present and future demand for rail freight in Hungary. First, the global and Europe-wide developments of freight transport will be surveyed and within it the role of rail will be analysed. Research will then go on exploring the Hungarian situation, and also the possibilities for Hungary to increase its stake in international rail freight transport. Quantity and quality aspects of rail freight transport are examined and then the future demand for rail freight transport services are estimated. A proposal for the setup of a rail freight transport monitoring scheme also forms part of this research. The second line of the project is the critical evaluation of the present rail freight statistics system, and based on this a proposal for adopting the recommendations of the EU (rail freight statistics based on NUTS-2 regions)
