South Eastern Europe after EU Enlargement and before Accession
ICEG European Center, the Hungarian Economic Association and the Confederation of Hungarian Employers and Industrialists organized an international conference in Budapest on: "South Eastern Europe after EU Enlargement and before Accession". The date of the conference is 4-5 April, 2005.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the key policy issues facing the South Eastern European countries after the recent Enlargement of the European Union and prior their future accession to the EU. Enlargement has increasingly brought the SEE region to the center of attention for policy makers and as a process has an impact on the economic development as well as accession strategy of the SEE countries. The conference devoted to the assessment of the likely economic consequences of recent enlargement on the SEE region, the preconditions of their EU integration, the current policy challenges and economic developments. The conference was divided to the following three topical sessions:
1. Macroeconomic difficulties and challenges for policy makers in South-Eastern Europe
This panel assesses the underlying macroeconomic developments, the main m macroeconomic challenges facing the countries of the region, including growth, fiscal and current account imbalances, inflation and exchange rate developments.2. Liberalization, integration and foreign trade of the region
This panel discussed the effects of liberalization and integration on the trade patterns and developments in the SEE region, with a special emphasis on the effects of the recent enlargement on trade developments of the SEE countries.3. Privatization, Capital Flows, Competitiveness and Productivity in the Region
This panel analyzed the dynamics and pattern of FDI and other capital flows to the region, the divestiture policies, and their impact on the changes in competitiveness and productivity of these economies. The reform of public finances and the streamlining of general government is one of the key issues in the region, which is accompanied by changes in welfare situation and social policies.The conference featured presentations from leading policy makers, representatives of international financial institutions and the European Union and NGO organizations.
